Hirst’s £50m diamond skull

This is the latest work from contemporary artist Damien Hirst. It’s a diamond encrusted skull that cost £14m to create and is expected to fetch £50m (close to $100m). I watched Hirst discuss the piece in depth on a BBC Newsnight Review special, and while I can’t remember his interpretation of the piece, I see it as a great piece of vanitas art.

On balance however, I think the piece fails because of the pattern flourish on the forehead of the skull, which I view as an unnecessary detraction. That said, art is highly personal, and I’m sure it will have many supporters.

Now, what are the bets that it ends up in the hands of a hedge fund manager?
